Greeting Thurston Nature Center Neighbors and Friends;
Thank you once again for wanting to be a special “Friend of The Thurston Nature Center”;
The last few weeks have certainly been busy at our Nature Center. Thanks to all our volunteers we were able to support and be involved in a number of neighborhood, extended community, and school events. Photos of all these activities can be viewed on either our TNC Facebook or Website pages
· The neighborhood – OHMHA, celebrated their Fall Festival at the TNC
· Thurston Elementary School - 4th and 5th Graders, Adopted-A-Trail and became Stewards of the TNC!
· Even though it was a little wet, we laid a lot of wood chips on the trails on our TNC Fall “Workdays”. There are more chips to spread - join us this coming weekend.
· The Thurston Elementary School – Kindergarten and 1st Graders, harvested their spinach, lettuce, and radishes at their Vegetable Garden. Pumpkins have been picked and being prepared for Halloween
· We joined the Thurston Landscape Club in clearing several areas of overgrown and in some cases dying plants and trees. In addition the “Friends of The Thurston Nature Center” combined efforts to start a Rescue the Thurston School Trees project.
So…what is coming up and how can you get involved in the fun we are having
· On Thursday (Oct. 24th) the TNC is hosting the AAPS-Environmental Education’s - HABITAT FIELD TRIP – for Thurston Elementary School’s 3rd Grade (Ms. Vanderhoff ‘s class). Great opportunity, to see the AAPS-Environmental Education’s naturalists at work. If you are interested in joining other naturalists please contact Mike Conboy (734-369-0992) and/or Frank Commiskey (734-359-0992). For more information (http://www.a2schools.org/ins.environed/3rd_-_habitat_walk)
· On Friday (Oct. 25th) the Thurston Elementary School will be having their Fall Carnival and “Friends of The Thurston Nature Center” will be there. We plan to have our popular T-shirts for sale, along with our Pond Critter Show and other displays.
· On Saturday and maybe even Sunday (Oct 26th and 27th) at the Thurston Nature Center we will be out having fun doing a number of different activities.
o Transplanting native prairie plants and wildflowers from our West Prairie to the three cultivated areas of the Oak Savanna. A great chance to learn something about our native plants and flowers!
o Feeling like having a good workout and using some muscles - - try out our mechanical Extractigator to pull Buckthorn in the Oak Hickory woods. We want to protect the trees and spring wild flowers from this invasive monster.
o Help us haul and lay woodchips on our trails. A traditional fun job for kids and parents.
o People who have adopted trees, or would like to adopt one, can work on their special tree if attention is needed.
Join us on Saturday (Oct.26th) at 10:00 AM – we will be meeting at our TNC Prairie Road entrance. If you have any questions you can contact either Mike Conboy (734-369-0992) and/or Frank Commiskey (734-359-0992)
